A verb ( فِعْل )of  Arabic Language has three (3) categories

a. Past Tense - called Fiil madhi (    اَلْمَاضِي  ) It is the root word.

b. Present / Future Tense   Fiil mudore'  (   اَلْمُضَارِع  )

c. Fiil Amar - Commanding mode. (  اَلْأَمْر )

Here we give examples of 3 letter words that form the basis or the root of the Arabic Language.

These are very common words in Quran and used in different tenses.

 1. What is a Verb?.
They are a collection of a word used to describe an action, state, or occurrence, and forming the main part of the predicate of a sentence, such as hear. They represent past, present and future actions.

2. In Arabic,  verbs are derived from a 3 letter root words .
A root word is the source from which  the other words are derived from.  The root word has a meaning, and the derived words have a connected  or extended meaning.
Example, the root word ك ت ب, means he wrote. So any words relatd to the root have to related to writing. The word based on the root   ك ت ب examples are: مكتب , كتاب , مكتبة , كا تب  

3. The root word is a past tense a male (He)

So a single word will carry a meaning of He did ... example a ka la - أ كل - mean He ate.

Course: 1 Topic 2: THE QUALITY OF ISIM ( NOUN) under Construction

 The most numerous of the Arabic words are the noun or ISIM. 

A. We had covered the the ways to identify if a word is an ISIM. They are:
a. look at its meaning.
b. The word begin with alif lam
c. The last letter is a tanween.
d. the word before it is haraf JAR.
e. The last letter is taa marbutah or an open ta. 

B. An ISIM (Noun) can be grouped into different categories based on the following:
a.  Gender - male or female
b. Number - One, Two or Many
c. Definitive or Not Definitive
d. Case Ending  

C, HANDLING ISIM (NOUNS)

In English language, when we meet a noun, we worry about only 2 items, the numbers, either singular or plural. We also concern whether it definite. Example the word CAT, singular CAT and many CATS. We are also concern whether it any CAT, we call it ... A CAT. If it is a particular CAT, we call it THE CAT.

However, for Arabic language, when we meet a noun or ISIM, we will be concerned about 4 items.  They are, the gender, number, definite or not and the case ending, is it kasrah, dommah or fathah. 

When you have a noun, you have to consider 4 items, its gender, its number, 
whether definite or not and the case of the last letter of the word.

All nouns is either MALE or FEMALE. Some words has two form, female and male. However some words, the Male and Female are the same.
In the above examples, the male word is THOLIBA, the female is THOLIBAH.
Some word are male - QOLAM
Some word is female - SYAJARAH.

The definitive is like in English where we add "the " in front of the noun.
Example the house- it is a definite and the known house. In Arabic we add alif Lam

Course:1 Topic: 1 CLASSIFICATION OF ARABIC WORDS (Under Construction)

 

All the words in Arabic Language  الكلمة . In the Quran, there are above 70,000 words. All these words can be classified as:
1. Noun - Isim -  إسم -
2. Verb - Fiil   فَعَلَ - 
3. Preposition - Haraf - حرف

A. What is Isim - An Isim is the name of items, it does not matter if you can it or not.  The words that give meaning without relating to time.
1. How to recognize an Isim (noun) - For most isim, there are indications that we use to identify that it as isim.  However , some isim do not have an indicator.
a. Recognize the meaning - If you know the meaning, and the meaning is noun (isim), then the word is isim.  What if you do not know the meaning?, then ..
b. The word begins with alif lam  ( ال ) .  Alif Lam to show it is a known noun, like in English .. The Car, it is a known car.
c. The word end with tanween, a noon sound at the end. Example ..  وَلَدًٌ ,  وَلَدً,   ولدِ
d. The word after Haraf JAR, we will learn about haraf JAR
e. Words that exist with male and female form, example jamil  (male) and the female of it is jamiliah.
f. Words after exclamation, Yaa..  

B. FIIL /  VERB (  فعل )
The Verb or fiil are divided into 3 groups. They are words to show the action. Verbs are divided into 3 types: 
a. Past - الماضي (almadhi) - the root or default form of a word
2. Present and Future  - المضارع ( almudore' ), derived from the past tense, the last letter can change.
3. Command or order or request   الاءمر (al'amar), 

C. PREPOSITION AL HARAF  (الحرف)
The word by itself does not carry a meaning. 
Example:
- على - on
- من - from
- فى - in
- الى - to
Caution - the translation may change depends on the sentence

I am building up the blog slowly. One of the items needed by learners is a reference books or webpages.

Arabic Corpus is one of a good site to refer to.

Among the things it offers are:

D. You can check translation by selected writer.

Suggest , you go through it. I think it is built by English Speaking people and made for English Speaking readers.

Many peoples are not used to letters that change its form, depending on the location of it. It can be independant/ individual or begining or middle or at the end of a word.

The best way is to give example in a sentence ( ayat)

Learn Arabic grammar lesson 1

Let us start with the introduction to grammar I am using the 1 hour video series and divide the video into 2 parts. I feel an hour lesson online is too long.

PART 1 Arabic words are divided into 3 categories... 1. Nouns 2. Verbs 3. Haraf.

A. Arabic Words

B. Indefinite Nouns.
In English - the form is - a book.
To make it definite, we say - the book.

However in Arabic ,
indefinite - we add tanuwin - haza baitun
non definite - we ad alif lam.. albaitait . No tanuwin is allowed.

We look at english sentence.... This is a house
The Arabic sentence is ...  This House...
There is no .. is a ... which is called copula words.  There is no copula words in Arabic. The same is for Malay... Ini rumah.

In translating Arabic to English.. we will add the copula word to make it readable.

Reading from Right to left

- haza kitabon

- haza  qolamin

- haza miftaahun .

Good Luck in Arabic

Today, I had learned from Maha how to say "good luck" in Arabic.

There are 3 ways to say good luck. However they are a direct translation of the English Language as different language may have a slightly different ways to say a similar things.

These are the different ways: 1. hath sa'eed - directly translated as "happy" luck. Hath means luck and sa'eed is happy. The wordings seem to be said in reversed ways. 2. bi nnajah - consists of two words. Bi meaning with and najjah means success. When these two words are joined together, the word "bi" is transformed to become "bin". A reader of Quran will understand this format under the topic of "idram" 3. The third way is to say "bi tawfeek"

Increase Your ArabicVocabulary

In learning any new language, the number of words that you know and able to use are very important for your to communicate with others. In fact is more important than the grammar. You may speak a broken Arabic and be understood, but with the right vocabulary, you have to resort to sign language.

     

Arabic root word is normally for past tense verb. Many of which are 3 syllabal word like a-ka-la means I have eaten.

In Arabic, most words are derived words It may be add to know that the root word in Arabic is mostly past tense.

This concept seem odd when some language had the nouns are the root word and the verbs are derived from nouns.

In the Last video, we had learn how to introduce ourselves in a non formal and formal ways. There are other ways to introduce, which will come naturally as we build up our understanding of the language. Now we are learning to be well mannered and to say welcome when people said thank you to us.

Arabic does not have the way like... you are welcomed, as we often use in English.

c. When someone says thank you to you, then you can say ... with pleasure

1. The Arabic word "Ma" is a wonder word that has so many meaning. It sound confusing for a learner like me and I thought it was odd until we think of similar situation in English, which we tend to take it for granted. In this case 'ma' is meant to be a question form and can be translated as "what".

2. The pronoun "ka" or "ki" is possessive pronoun, the like of "your". In arabic many of the words changes according to 'gender' and many other criteria.

3. In English , we learn about singular and plurals. However the Arabic has singular, two and plurals.

Introducing Yourself

Many people will be arguing about the best way to learn Arabic. Each has their own logic and his point of view. As for me, let us just do it. It will take time and a lot of practices.
Let us with Carole, she does not sound Arabic, so much the better, as the Arab may tend to speak too fast.
Our first lesson is to introduce ourself.
1. She is using the word…”marhaban” – which to me seem to mean welcome. Most likely that she is introducing herself to a group of audiences and welcoming the audiences.
2. Surirtu – imply that I am glad , bi – means with, biliqa i – mean meeting and ka means you, which is for one male. .. ki – you woman … kum –you plural
The Arabic words can be combined to make it appear to be one word. In this case biliqa’ika is in fact 3 separate words joint to appear like 1 word.
3. I like the second introduction – ismi = my name. Arabic does not have the verb of “am” or “is”. Thus it comes.. my name Carol.
It is not uncommon to say a form of greeting such as Salam.. In  fact the global practice of shaking hand is brought by the Arab to Europe through Spain. Arabs was leading the world for more that 600 hundred years before the English started the empire.

One of the site that I did to help me in my journey was understandquran-com. I appreciate the good efforts done by Dr Abdulazeez, and I pray that his effort will be rewarded.

There are four type of courses offerred. The best part is, all the courses was free.

The offered courses are:

It courses were available, I think 4 years ago. When I check today, there is a small fees  charged. I think it is reasonable, the speaker has to earn a living, so are the support staff. The fee is very reasonable, and about the course of a book.

I like his style of total interaction. After all that is what we do when we speak, our arm and body movement are helping to deliver the message.

All the program was in English, but now there are many variety to it. Somehow, I am more comfortable with my native Malay language. It is not that my command of English is poorer, but the Malay language has a lot of similarity to Arabic. Hundred of words in Malay have their origin from Arabic language.

ISIM FA'IL

When I started to learn Arabic, I found it odd, as the Arabic ROOT WORD is past tense or FA'IL MADHI and from FA'IL MADHI, other words can be derived.

I am used to the Malay and English systems, where the root words are normally a nouns or ISIM, to use the Arabic equivalent.

I Arabic, another king of nouns can be derived from a verb, FA'IL MADHI,  the nouns is called TOOLING NOUNS . I did not catch the Arabic Word for it. What it does is, the past tense word is transformed to be a nouns for the tool or equipment that does the verb.

There are many style to transform the verb to become a tool. The transformation style is called the WAZAN.

1. WAZAN 1 - FA A LA --- become MAF A LUN

فعل...... مفعل

2. WAZAN 2 - FA - AAA LA  becomes MAF AAA LUN

فعال .....مفعال

As an example  FA TA HA meaning .. he open it, converted to the tool to open.. or key, a new word is formed ..MIS TAA HUN.
